Peace Officers Memorial Day

Today is Peace Officers Memorial Day, which has been observed on May 15 since 1962. As part of National Police Week, we pay tribute to local, State, and Federal law enforcement officers who, in the line of duty, have been disabled or have made the ultimate sacrifice for the communities they serve. We honor them by remembering their courage, voicing our appreciation for their dedication, participating in memorial services, and displaying the United States flag at half-staff.

Flying the flag at half-staff is not only a visual reminder of mourning, but a strong, emotional symbol that connects our nation. As these officers have given their lives, we must also work to promote peace, preserve our communities, and strengthen the bonds between all our people. While we can never repay the debt to these officers and their families, we can honor them by living the values they dutifully protected. Doing so will help ensure our nation and its people are free from the fear of violence, crime, and extremism.

The Peace Chapel of the Levere Memorial Temple also houses the Freedom and LawEnforcement Memorial, which was dedicated on April 20, 2018 with over 100 guests in attendance. Many personal stories were shared, and a number of Fraternity members were honored during that service. As the most recent addition to the chapel, it has a growing list of members who have given the last full measure of devotion (listed below). To learn more about the men whose names are engraved, please follow this link to the story. To share your own personal story, please contact our Director of Communications at contact@sae.net.

Walter Kevin Artz (Indiana State ’77)
David Nelson (Occidental ’11)
Daniel Ellis (Eastern Kentucky ’04)

While Peace Officer Memorial Day is recognized today, please continue to remember the thousands of Americans who remain deployed around the world along with the men and women who serve your local community. With that in mind, let us all do our part to promote peace and share our values.
