What first inspired Mitch to get involved with NMDP?
Mitch DeVillers joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) Massachusetts Delta Chapter in 2019 and graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2023. He got involved with NMDP at the first NMDP/SAE swab event they held on campus. NMDP gave a presentation at one of their chapter meetings to describe the whole process/program, and then Mitch swabbed and joined the event shortly after. It was a quick and easy process, and he thought to himself; Why not sign up to potentially help someone in need?
What went through Mitch’s mind when he first got the call that he was a match?
When Mitch received the call to donate, he was excited to learn that he’d have the opportunity to help potentially save a life. He said yes right away, as he felt he should follow through on that commitment he made on campus back at that first event the chapter held.
How has being a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and living by the values of the True Gentleman shaped Mitch’s decision to donate?
When reflecting on how SAE influenced his decision to donate, Mitch connects it back to his time living in the chapter house. During those years, there were always moments when a brother needed help, and it was the responsibility of the others to step up and support him. Mitch views this experience in the same light: when a patient is in need, it’s up to those who are signed up, able, and willing to answer the call. He adds that this experience has only strengthened his commitment to service, leadership, and brotherhood.
What message would Mitch share with other brothers about joining the NMDP registry and potentially saving a life?
“NMDP is a phenomenal group that works tirelessly and in an impressively coordinated fashion to make things as easy as possible for you to potentially help save a life. The sign-up process is quick and easy, and allows you to join an amazing community of those willing to help others. If called to donate, you will be assisted every step of the way by an NMDP representative through a fulfilling journey of service. I would recommend signing up to anyone I meet who is willing and able to do so.”
