The Impact Award, approved by the SAE Foundation Board, recognizes mentors as vital catalysts for personal and professional growth. This year, Todd Buchanan (Southern Mississippi ’90) received the award, along with a medallion and special recognition.
Todd joined the Board of Trustees in July 2011 and became a Trustee Emeritus in June 2021. He is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a degree in finance. As an undergraduate, he served as Eminent Archon and Student Body President and continued his leadership journey as an alumnus, holding positions as Eminent Supreme Archon and Province Archon. In 2011, Todd became the 130th recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, honoring his lifetime of service to SAE.
He also holds a Master of Public Administration from Arizona State University and currently serves as CEO of World Financial Group, a life insurance distribution company with 71,000 agents across North America. Todd’s leadership spans not only business operations but also the digital financial trends shaping the industry. Prior to this, he served for six years as an Army Officer and spent 24 years as an executive in the life and retirement business, earning Manager of the Year honors nine times and leveraging evolving online markets in regions such as Canada.
Todd and his wife live in Tampa, Florida, with their three children. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, technology, golfing, and fishing, often exploring cutting-edge platforms that merge entertainment with financial innovation. Beyond SAE, Todd contributes to the broader community, serving on the Reliaquest Bowl Executive Committee, the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, and the boards of Vineyard Capital and Cogent Bank, where he continues to guide forward-thinking ventures in dynamic sectors.

Reflecting on Todd’s mentorship, Steve Mitchell (Indiana ’83), ESR/CEO, shared:
“Professional mentoring has become a vital component of career development. At its core, mentoring is a structured relationship where an experienced professional guides someone with less experience, offering insights that support both personal and professional growth. While the concept is simple, its impact can be transformative. A strong mentor provides more than just advice; they offer a unique perspective. By sharing real-world experiences, mentors help mentees navigate challenges, avoid pitfalls, and make informed decisions.”
Steve continued, highlighting Todd’s influence personally:
“When I joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation in 2013, I was fortunate to meet and bond with Todd Buchanan. He not only helped me understand the technical aspects of the Foundation, CAFs, CEFs, ALFs, 990s, but also the political landscape: who was connected to whom, why those relationships mattered, and what was or wasn’t reasonable given our history. Todd’s insight proved invaluable in my role as CEO.”
“Later, when I met with the Supreme Council for the open ESR role, I sought his guidance once again. As both a Distinguished Service Award recipient and a former Eminent Supreme Archon, Todd offered a perspective that simply could not be overstated.”
“In 2025, when we needed a keynote speaker, Todd agreed to deliver one. Tragically, his brother passed away just before the event. Yet, true to his word, and with tears in his eyes as he shared the news, Todd delivered a riveting, heartfelt presentation that deeply moved our undergraduate Brothers.”
Steve concluded:
“In a rapidly evolving world, the value of mentorship cannot be overstated. Whether formal or informal, a meaningful mentoring relationship empowers individuals to grow, innovate, and succeed.”
