David Arendt (Drake ’78) Obituary

David Arendt, 69 of Montezuma passed away Monday, May 19, 2025 at his home. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Friday, May 30, 2025 at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma. Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Thursday, May 29, 2025 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma with the family present to greet friends and relatives from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Masonic Service will begin at 4:30 on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Montezuma Fire Department or the Montezuma Fine Arts. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements. David Leroy Arendt, the son of Richard “Dick” and Leta “Lea” (Close) Arendt, was born on May 17, 1956, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He graduated as class President from Montezuma High School with the class of 1974 before graduating from Drake University where he was a member of the SAE Phi Alpha Fraternity. Dave lived in Green Bay, WI and Muscatine before moving back to Montezuma where he managed Sig Manufacturing before joining his father at People’s Savings Bank in Montezuma in 2001, retiring in September of 2022.

Dave enjoyed making horseradish, tailgating at Iowa Football games in his motor home, golfing, taking family trips to visit his brother, Mike, in Turkey, having 4th of July parties at his home at Lake Ponderosa and attending Fire Convention with his fellow firefighters.  Dave also loved playing Santa Clause for his great nieces and nephews along with his great-great nieces and nephews. He even dressed up like an ex-con for family pictures once but above all, Dave just loved his family, especially his mother, Lea. David was a member of the Montezuma Country Club, the Montezuma Fire Department from 2002 to 2014, the Shriners and the Masonic Lodge where he took care of the Masonic IOOF Cemetery in Montezuma for the last several years.  Dave’s memory will be cherished by his mother, Leta Arendt of Montezuma; a nephew, Michael (Shannon) Arendt II of Montezuma; a niece, Heather (Adam) Snook of Montezuma; great nieces and nephews, Alisha (Mikey) Lyons, Gaige (Ciara) Arendt, Brayden Arendt, Hunter (fiancé, Brianna Massengale) VanDee, Chloe Snook and Emma Snook; great-great nieces and nephew, Emlynne, Ada, Knox and Michael; along with many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard “Dick” Arendt, and two brothers, William Arendt and Michael Arendt.
