A Lifetime of Dedication to Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Major Hondo Davids (Maryland-College Park ’72)

With over 50 years in the brotherhood, few can speak to the SAE experience as well as Major “Hondo” Davids (Maryland-College Park ‘72). From his service in the Marine Corps to his multi-decade run as a Province Officer, Hondo exemplifies the leadership, mindset, and dedication that define a True Gentleman.

Major Davids’ career has always been one of service. After graduating from the University of Maryland, he entered Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia, before moving on to flight school in Pensacola, Florida.

While stationed there, he discovered that the University of West Florida had just established an SAE chapter. Hondo seized the chance to give back to the fraternity that had shaped his own life. He quickly became a mentor, helping the chapter strengthen its operations, build traditions, and connect with the larger fraternity.

That early experience set the tone for the rest of his SAE volunteerism. Hondo realized that what makes SAE truly special is not buildings, rituals, or titles, but people, “Without people willing to step up, the tradition dies a little.” Whether advising undergraduates, serving on house corporations, or leading as Province Archon, he poured his energy into developing that next generation of leaders. His approach was simple but effective, “If you’ve got a problem, go ahead and tell me, but also bring some ideas on how to solve it.” By pairing accountability with encouragement, Hondo empowered young men to take ownership of their chapters and their own growth.

Over the years, that philosophy carried him through countless roles across the Realm. From supporting chapters through F&H to tackling problems one-on-one with undergraduates, he became known for his directness, care, and steady presence. His efforts did not go unnoticed; SAE has honored him with some of its highest awards, including the Distinguished Service Award, the Merit Key, and most recently the Order of DeVotie. For Hondo, these aren’t just accolades but affirmations of a life built on servant leadership. “Do as much as you can, for as many as you can, for as long as you can,” he says, summing up his guiding principle.

Now approaching retirement, Hondo continues to reflect on what SAE has meant to him, and what he hopes it will mean for others. His message to today’s brothers is straightforward, but profound, “We can never be perfect, but we can always strive to be a True Gentleman.”
