The Record Online

The Record Online is the official online publication for Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Alongside the printed magazine The Record, this publication is dedicated to chapter and alumni news, events and opportunities, and serves a way for brothers to stay connected with the organization.

Archives: The Record Winter 2001

Many SAE members are legacy members: those who have blood relatives in the Fraternity. It is not uncommon to see multiple generations of brothers come from the same family. Stanley Lind (Kansas ’42) was very headstrong in his efforts to keep both family and Fraternity as focal points throughout his life. Thumbing back to the winter 2001 edition of The Record, you’ll find a very peculiar, if not humourous request made by Lind: the initiation of this then one-year-old grandson, Andrew. The pin he is wearing in the photo was handmade by Stanley. Ultimately, the request was denied, as Fraternity Law states that a candidate for membership must be a male student of the collegiate host institution that is the domicile of an active Chapter Collegiate. You must be a student at the university in order to be initiated.

In the spring of 2019, Stanley saw his prediction come to fruition. Andrew was initiated into the chapter at Kansas State University. Although Stanley would have preferred that he would have been a Kansas Alpha man like himself, he was nonetheless very pleased that his grandson had also become his fraternity brother.

“Both men enjoyed the moment when they first gave each other the handshake. Our family takes comfort in knowing that my dad (Stanley) lived long enough to enjoy the bond of fraternal brotherhood with his grandson before his passing,” said Richard Lind, Stanley’s son and father of Andrew.
