Preventing Tragedies in Greek Life: A Call for Education, Accountability, and Cultural Change

The tragic death of a Dartmouth student after attending a sorority and fraternity event serves as a painful reminder of the risks associated with alcohol misuse in collegiate Fraternity and Sorority life. Stories like this underscore the need for Fraternities and Sororities to focus on creating safe environments, especially when alcohol is present. Addressing these challenges requires proactive measures centered on education, accountability, and cultural reform.

As a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), I’ve personally witnessed how reform can drive positive change. Although SAE has been controversially labeled as the “deadliest fraternity,” we’ve chosen a focused path of leadership in safety and responsibility. By abolishing traditional pledging—a practice often associated with high-pressure scenarios and risky behavior—and becoming a national leader in the anti-hazing movement, SAE has demonstrated that it’s possible to evolve and make student safety a top priority.

The Role of Education
Educating members about the dangers of alcohol misuse and promoting intervention skills are an essential first steps. Comprehensive alcohol awareness programs should teach students about the long-term risks of binge drinking, the signs of alcohol poisoning, and the importance of seeking help when someone is in danger. Equally important is fostering an environment where members feel empowered to step in and prevent dangerous situations.

Enforcing Accountability
Beyond education, Fraternity and Sorority organizations must establish systems of accountability to prevent reckless behavior. This includes implementing strict guidelines for social events, requiring sober monitors, and ensuring that all members are trained in risk management. Universities and national Fraternity and Sorority organizations can partner to create mandatory training programs and oversee adherence to safety standards.

Driving Cultural Change
True progress in Fraternity and Sorority Life stems from cultural change. At SAE, our decision to eliminate pledging and have a zero-tolerance stance on hazing is a testament to the importance of rethinking traditions. These changes have shifted our focus to creating a culture of inclusion, respect, and responsibility. By leading the way in anti-hazing efforts, SAE hopes to set an example for other Fraternity and Sorority organizations.

Tragedies like the one at Dartmouth remind us that the stakes are far too high to remain complacent. Fraternity and Sorority organizations must commit to reform by prioritizing education, enforcing accountability, and embracing cultural shifts. The ultimate goal is to create environments where students can thrive, grow, and succeed without unnecessary risks. Together, we can prevent such heartbreaking losses and ensure that Fraternity and Sorority Life becomes synonymous with safety and positive impact.
