Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity Elects Ben Johnson II as First African American President

Evanston, IL – August 29, 2025

In a historic move, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) Fraternity elected Ben Johnson II (University of California – Irvine ’87) as the new National Board President (Eminent Supreme Archon) on June 21, 2025. Mr. Johnson is the first African American to lead the organization in its 169-year history.

Mark McDonough (Youngstown ’98), Immediate Past Eminent Supreme Archon, said, “Mr. Johnson’s vision for the future of SAE is inspiring, and we are confident that his leadership will guide us toward achieving our mission with a renewed sense of purpose.”

Upon his election, Mr. Johnson stated, “The significance of this moment is clear. My goal is to ensure that our membership is truly a lifetime experience, collaborate with all members to continue the legacy of SAE, and expand our reach and impact within our communities.”

In addition to his work with Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Ben has collaborated with school board members and district leaders to develop effective governance teams. His roles include serving as an executive coach, leadership trainer, strategic planner, and facilitator. He has worked with districts of varying sizes, ranging from 125 to 70,000 students, bringing practical experience to each collaboration.

Mr. Johnson was elected to the Riverside County Board of Education in 2022. Before this position, he served for twenty-one years as a trustee on the Alvord Board of Education in Riverside, California. During his tenure, he played a key role in improving academic outcomes and enhancing facilities across all campuses.

Throughout his distinguished career, Ben has been a champion for diversity and inclusion. His experience is particularly relevant to SAE’s mission and vision to lead the way in incorporating diversity and inclusion practices, policies, and discussions within the interfraternal community.

This election reflects the Fraternity’s commitment to promoting a culture that celebrates and intentionally expands opportunities for both its collegiate and alumni members.
