Thomas W. Itin (Cornell University ’57) is presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who

Mr. Itin has been endorsed by Marquis Who’s Who as a leader in the field of entrepreneurship.

Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Thomas William Itin with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Itin celebrates many years’ experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Mr. Itin, president and chief executive officer of TWI International, Inc and Acrodyne Corp since 1964, is a talented entrepreneur whose Michigan-based consulting and advisory firm provides health and telemedicine services to clients. Recognized for the development of telemedicine, his company, which is known to the public as Call A Doctor Plus US, has been a partner with Teladoc for 10 years now and boasts over 50 million members with 80% market share throughout the world. The company also notably offers several added benefits, including legal services.

A serial entrepreneur, Mr. Itin’s years as an investment banker, consultant and insurance professional have also included the oversight of LBO Capital Corporation as founder and chief executive officer since 1987. A technology company based in Michigan, LBO develops intellectual property, patents and processes to license to companies including Powder Impression molding of waste plastic and conversion to energy.

Mr. Itin’s extensive background included serving as the founder, director and CEO of Williams Controls Inc. in Portland, Oregon, between 1988 and 2002, taking it from $8,000,000 in marginally profitable sales to over $80,000,000 of highly profitable sale and onto the NYSE. Williams invented the first drive by wire instrument: the electronic foot pedal for Class eight trucks with 100% market share to this day.

He was co-founder and board of director’s member of Roadmaster Industries Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia, between 1988 and 1993, growing it from $40,000,000 of unprofitable sales to over $800,000,000 of highly profitable sales and on to the NYSE.

He was also one of the founders of the Alexander Hamilton Life Insurance Company in Michigan, a position he held from 1962 to 1990. Now a part of Lincoln Financial Group, it is currently recognized as the fifth largest life insurance company in the USA, ranking 21st in the Fortune 500 with over $288 billion in assets.

Prior to becoming a successful business owner, Mr. Itin worked for Mobil Oil as an executive in New York City from 1957 to 1962 and as an employee relations adviser for Mobil International in Europe and North Africa from 1960 to 1962. He also briefly taught as an instructor in economics and business at the University of Maryland’s North African branch between 1960 and 1962 and was an independent insurance broker in Elmhurst, Illinois, between 1962 and 1964.
As an established leader in the business world, Mr. Itin was called upon to serve as chairman of the board of the Steel Tree Group Inc., the Colorado Ridge Corporation, the Itin Oil Company, Dearborn Wheels Inc. and the Lilliendahl Corporation.

Mr. Itin has been affiliated with several local organizations in support of his community. He was a member of the City Council of Orchard Lake, Michigan, and chairman of the successful 1964 $10,000,000 bond issues for West Bloomfield Township High School. He also was one of the founds the Stern Berkeley Center Competition, which is New York University’s entrepreneurial contest that has taken place every year for the past 20 years. Mr. Itin’s further major contributions included co-founding Real Second Chance, an organization that helps people recently released from prison build their own companies, co-founding the Big Red Fund, an entrepreneurial funding group of investors for Cornell University, and one of the founders of First Tee, which helps inner city children play golf. Furthermore, Mr. Itin is a founder and past president of the Personnel Management Council of Libya and co-founder and past president of Ski Racing Patrons of Michigan Inc. Today, he remains a class council member of Cornell, a member of the Cornell Club of Michigan since 1980 and a member of the Cornell Club of New York.

To prepare for his career, Mr. Itin earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University in 1957 and co registered in the Johnson Graduate School of Management. He then obtained a Master of Business Administration in finance, economics and human resources at New York University in 1959, followed by postgraduate coursework on campus from 1959 to 1960.

Mr. Itin’s success as chairman of Williams Controls was recognized by its being named to the Top 100 Fastest Growing companies in America by Business Week in 1996 selected in 1990and Fortune for four years 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been cited in the 61st edition of Who’s Who in America, the 25th edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, and the 21st and 23rd editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest. He was also selected in 1990 as a member of Who’s Who Worldwide.
