Dr. Thomas G. Goodale
March 25, 1940 – January 5, 2025
Dr. Thomas “Tom” Goodale (Iowa State ’62), Past Eminent Supreme Recorder, accomplished higher education administrator, and Loyal Son of Minerva, entered the Chapter Eternal on January 5, 2025, at the age of 84.
Brother Goodale joined SAE in 1960 at Iowa State University (Iowa Gamma), following in the footsteps of his brother, Bob Goodale (Iowa State ’55). After graduating from Iowa State, he would earn a Master of Arts from Michigan State University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Iowa State. His higher education career would lead him to serve as the Director of Orientation at Michigan State University, Assistant and Associate Dean of Students at Iowa State University, and Dean of Students at the University of Florida before serving as Vice President/Chancellor at the University of Denver, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and American University. He served as the 10th Eminent Supreme Recorder from 2000 to 2007 and as Executive Director of Omicron Delta Kappa from 2009-2012.
Serving NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education was one of his prides of joy. He would serve as the Board Chair from 1988-1989. He was recognized in 1992 with the Fred Turner (Illinois ’24) Award for Outstanding Service to NASPA and in 2005 as a Pillar of the Profession.
The Fraternity recognized Dr. Goodale with the Order of Minerva, Merit Key Award, and its highest recognition, the Distinguished Service Award (#104), for his unwavering commitment and dedication. He was also recognized with the Gold Medal by the North American Interfraternity Conference in 2022 for his lifelong service to the interfraternal community.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 18, in Lexington, VA. Location and Time TBD.
