Alex Pancoe, age 38, passed away on Monday, May 5th, on the mountain of Makalu in Nepal.

Alex died in a place that he loved doing what he loved.

A devoted husband and father, Alex leaves behind his wife Nina and their two young children, Zephyr and Venice. Alex’s greatest joy in life was his children. They were his entire world.

Alex’s mountaineering adventures began only within the past decade after a safari in Africa.

A brain tumor survivor, Alex raised money for Lurie Children’s Hospital, the very hospital that saved his life in college when he was attending Northwestern University. His mountaineering journey brought him to the top of Mt. Everest. He completed the Explorer’s Grand Slam Last Degree, which includes the Seven Summits and skiing to the North and South Poles. Fewer than 80 people in the world have completed this challenge.

Despite recently being diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Alex did not let his diagnosis stop him from pursuing his dreams. Alex wanted to inspire people to continue pursuing their dreams and passions no matter what obstacle they may face.

Alex grew up in Highland Park, IL, and attended Northwestern University, where he met some of his closest friends. After graduation he started his career as a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley, where he specialized in biotech. One of his favorite activities was attending Northwestern football and basketball games especially after his son Zephyr was born.

One of Alex’s favorite memories was when the Chicago Cubs won the World Series. He actually postponed his trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro so that he could be there to see the Cubs play. When Alex reached the summit of Mt. Everest, he raised the “W” flag. That summer he had the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at Wrigley Field with his friends and family watching him in the stands.

Alex is survived by his mother Mariann Pancoe, uncle Michael Pancoe, aunt Ellie Pancoe, cousins Hannah Pancoe Martone and Julie Pancoe.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather Arthur Pancoe, grandmother Gladys Pancoe and his cousin Beth Pancoe.

In lieu of flowers please donate to Lurie Children’s Hospital and the Lurie Cancer Center.

A celebration of life for Alex will be held for him this summer, with details to be announced at a later date.
