The annual combined SAE event of North Dakota Alpha and North Dakota Beta was years in the making, culminating in a memorable gathering when Brother Doug Burgum (North Dakota State ’78) was elected Governor of North Dakota. This milestone presented both North Dakota chapters with a unique opportunity. In June 2019, Governor Burgum graciously hosted the combined event at the Governor’s residence in Bismarck, North Dakota, allowing brothers to gather and bond.
Subsequent events have been held in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, where alumni gather for golf, pickleball, and an afternoon happy hour on pontoons. These gatherings provide a great opportunity for camaraderie and fundraising to support current chapter members.
Funds are raised through entrance fees and golf hole sponsorships, with proceeds generously split between the North Dakota Alpha and North Dakota Beta Chapter Alumni Associations. These funds support various needs, such as sending active members to national events.
The events have seen a diverse range of attendees, spanning SAEs in their 80s to younger actives in their 20s, reflecting the inclusive spirit of brotherhood across generations. As Bob Daggett (North Dakota ’85) remarked, “It has been a pleasure to get to know SAEs from the other chapter… they are SAEs… I know I’m going to like them!”
Looking ahead, the 2025 event is scheduled for June 18-20, with plans for new activities and locations. Fred Daggett (North Dakota State ’85) and others have issued a challenge to “bring one more SAE brother to the next gathering,” aiming to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood further.
Reflecting on the legacy of Fred and Bob’s dad, a North Dakota SAE who remains cherished in the Chapter Eternal, the organizers emphasized the enduring friendships forged through their shared SAE experience. As they reminded the active members, “The college experience is great, but it’s the lifelong friendships we relish.”
Thank you, brothers, for your ongoing support.
